The tutu – cute and iconic!
When it comes to ballet clothes the first thing that springs to mind is the iconic tutu. The origin of these cute little skirts dates back to 19th Century France. Dance dresses back then were long, with the occasional ankle on view, until 1832 when Marie Taglioni performed La Sylphide in a skirt cut above the ankle to show off her intricate legwork. Her long, flowing tutu is what we now call the Romantic tutu.
Did you know – the word “tutu” is actually derived from “cucu”, a colloquial French word meaning “bottom”? When ballerinas performed to a theatre audience, those in the ‘cheap seats’ were sat in a lower part of the theatre. From where they were sat they could see underneath the ballerinas’ skirts and could see their bottoms!
